Atkins Diet Quick Hits: Constipation and Diarrhea

In this the second of the “Quick Hit” series of videos, I deal with a question I receive often in the comments section or private message to me. “What do I do about gastronomic ailments, like Constipation or Diarrhea?” This might be a TMI (Too Much Information) episode.
For Constipation, I recommend:
1. Adding ground flax meal into your diet in things like salad or other items (like mock danishes)
2. Consider Psyllium husks in form of capsules or powder (1-2 TBS per day). Note: Remember to get the SF powder if you go that route.
3. Consider restrict dairy/cheese intake
4. Get your water in each day (more than 64 oz)
5. Exercise!
Diarrhea is often a temporary occurrence on the diet due to the wastes being removed. If it occurs longer term:
* some have recommended increasing your cheese and dairy consumption
* Increase fiber intake

As for the gall bladder question, there are certainly lots of people on ADBB or low carb friends who have had their gall bladders out and were successful. Their responses that I have read don’t say they have had to modify the diet at all. For better advice, I would post there this question.

I have never taken psyllium husks outside of SF Metamucil, so I might not be the best guide. There are plenty of 100% psyllium tablets, and I would presume they all work identically. I personally prefer a proactive approach with 1-2 TBS of flax meal daily in a salad.
Obviously the diet will be an adjustment for you, but the one thing it should do is get you off the blood sugar roller coaster. Once that happens you will feel more energy all day long than before.

THanks for these series. I started Atkins yesterday and am totally freaked out. I normally eat a diet rich in fruits and veggies, more than most people. (15 servings a day.) I have about 50LBs to lose, but am concerned about all the meat in my system. I normally do not eat much meat. My weakness is sugary stuff! I will try psyllium husks, but do you have a suggestion as how to take them? Also, I had my gallbladder removed years ago. Have you heard of any concerns about Atkins with this?

Yes, but how many fiber carbs are there. If it is like mine, there are like 3g of insoluble fiber carbs and like 2g of soluble fiber. That is a net 0g of carbs according to Dr. A. You have to be aware it is sweetened with aspartame like I said in the video, but its affect on insulin production should be zero. (Fiber can’t be burned for fuel and passes through untouched.)

If you have impaired kidney function already, it is suggested you deal with that issue first. If no kidney deficiency exists, this diet is perfectly fine. I have had urinalysis tests for the last 4 years with excellent results.

What a crazy myth! …
What a crazy myth! You think if meat stayed in your intestines for years that you might have real problems. Leave a piece of meat sealed outdoors and it will rot in weeks, let alone years. So no it is not true, your intestines are emptied within 30-40 hours of eating.

Good call. The tablets or capsules are also 100% psyllium husks, but are far less than you would get from TBS of the stuff straight.

Another good fix …
Another good fix for constipation is 1) make sure you are getting most of your carbs from veggies, and 2) take a magnesium supplement. Magnesium draws water to the bowel and is the active ingredient in Milk of Magnesia.
