Atkins Diet: Should kids do low carb?

Yazar: admin September 2, 2008

In this long Quick Hits video, I discuss whether kids or teenagers (as my daughter oft reminds me) should follow the Atkins Diet as prescribed or a more moderate low carb or carb conscious plan.

I respond by saying that for most teenagers a lower carb approach is probably best, especially not if the choice is not driven by the child themselves. I believe as parents we are called to teach our kids a healthy way of eating, and while acknowledging kids’ environment and choices, we should make and help them choose to eat wisely, which by almost any standard should not include “whites” - refined starches and sugars. There should be no requirement for breading or donuts to be healthy or happy. The challenge with kids and teenagers is therefore school lunch programs and their unhealthy nature.

This is by no means a discouragement for teenagers, who may want to try Atkins Diet due to an internal desire to lose weight. I just want them to be aware of what their decision means.

    PS - I also feel I …
PS - I also feel I need to throw in just a bit of clarification. The Atkins Diet is not necessarily a strict ketogenic past 14 days. A strict ketogenic diet is one with generally less than 50g per day. There are lots of Atkins Dieters after the 14-day Induction who eat a lot more than that - up to 100-150g for some on Maintenance.

I think you are on …
I think you are on the right path there, and that is what I called in this video a carb conscious path. A child (<~15 or 16 years old) IMO should not be placed on a ketogenic diet without the supervision of their doc — even the Atkins Diet Centers in NY didn’t do ketogenic diets typically for the child patients. Those diet doctors and nutritionists followed a latter stage OWL or Maintenance phase approach.
I think we just got our lines crossed on this issue, and how low my “lower carb” was.

    check out this …
    check out this study..
“Long-term use of the ketogenic diet in the treatment of epilepsy”

the researchers noticed slowed growth in the children running a keto diet.. hope this will change your mind :) for children: moderate low carb okay, ketogenic no!

  4. tobiasgeiger Diyor ki :

    I see your …
I see your reasoning and you almost convinced me (not of this argument though - I mean there are several more factors in a ketogenic diet that lead to the lean body mass)

but I still think ketogenic diet might be one step too far for (normal-weight) children.. I’d suggest a moderate low carb diet…but then again, those are kids and as kids they should have the right (to some degree) to get sweets/candy/icecream every once in a while.. :)

  5. bowulf Diyor ki :

Yet if you look for …
Yet if you look for contra-indications of IGF-1 deficiency, you would look for lean body mass loss as IGF-1 also is utilized to rebuild tissue. As has been proven over and over in studies — “The Effects of a High-protein, Low-fat, Ketogenic Diet on Adolescents With Morbid Obesity: Body Composition, Blood Chemistries, and Sleep Abnormalities” being one, ketogenic diets lose less or retain more lean body mass or tissues than Calories Restriction or low fat diet.

  6. tobiasgeiger Diyor ki :

    yes I’ve read those …
    yes I’ve read those..
and did you know soy milk even produces more IGF-1 than regular?
but we still cant draw any conclusions since the body works different in a ketogenic state

  7. bowulf Diyor ki :

    So everyone will …
So everyone will know - their conclusion - “Milk intake was positively associated with sIGF-I concentrations and height. An increase in milk intake from 200 to 600 mL/d corresponded to a 30% increase in circulating IGF-I. This suggests that milk compounds have a stimulating effect on sIGF-I concentrations and, thereby, on growth”

“Studies .. indicate that intake of animal protein (which ketogenic diets are rich), milk is associated with greater velocity of linear growth in childhood.

  8. bowulf Diyor ki :

    Did you check how …
Did you check how long that study was for 7 days on a ketogenic diet with 2 week refeeding cycle? That is hardly determinant of anything. After 7 days of any ketogenic diet the body is being shocked as the glycogen stores are being restored. It is similar to a fast period.

  9. bowulf Diyor ki :

Did you look at the …
Did you look at the study I provided in which it pointed to milk protein as the determinant of increased IGF-1 not increased carbohydrate in Danish kids?

  10. tobiasgeiger Diyor ki :

take a look at this …
take a look at this study
Reduction in serum leptin and IGF-1 but preserved T-lymphocyte numbers and activation after a ketogenic diet in rheumatoid arthritis patients

it showed increased cortisol and decreased igf-1..NOW, cortisol limits bone growth and IGF-1 enhances it…I think ketogenic diet is definately not the way to go for children!!

  11. bowulf Diyor ki :

    I sent you a video …
I sent you a video on the video I did on how to start the Atkins Diet. The short answer is buy the book, read it, and then get your house loaded up with legal food and pruned of the junk. Chapter 11 of the book spells it out pretty clearly on how to get going and start losing.

  12. tobiasgeiger Diyor ki :

    well we still don’t …
    well we still don’t know..
the IGF-1 of the milk isn’t because of the protein in it

  13. JimmyChiffels Diyor ki :

    Hi I have a …
Hi I have a question! How do I start?
I mean do I need to buy anything?
Or.. I don’t know how to start lol

  14. bowulf Diyor ki :

    That’s why I didn’t …
That’s why I didn’t want to say all teens shouldn’t do it as some can see great progress and keep it off. Congrats on your weight loss!

  15. F0ILHEAD Diyor ki :

    I remeber when i …
I remeber when i got on the Atkins diet in 2007, I went from 250 pounds down to 200 in a matter of two - three months. I was 17 years old at the time btw.

  16. bowulf Diyor ki :

    in both adults and …
in both adults and children, especially in treating children for epilepsy. In none of these subjects or in contributing doctors private practice was noted the deficiency in bone growth. Look at Inuit people who were within a few percentile of the average height eating a ketogenic diet their whole life.

  17. bowulf Diyor ki :

Ok, so you tell me …
Ok, so you tell me how many refined sugars or starches are necessary for healthy living? The research I have seen “Animal protein intake, serum insulin-like growth factor I, and growth in healthy 2.5-y-old Danish children” points more towards protein consumption in the form of milk rather than carbohydrate in these children diet.
As for not making statements, in the lack of evidence to the contrary or proof where does one lie. I can point to numerous studies pointing to the efficacy (cont.)

  18. tobiasgeiger Diyor ki :

    mind you, insulin …
mind you, insulin is a very powerful hormone when it comes to growth! There are no studies about this but I’m more than certain there will be a significant link between this diet and final height of the participating person..
Insulin btw is also involved in the production of IGF-1, which is one of the most crucial factors in longitudal bone growth..
So please don’t make such statements too soon because we don’t know as long as there arent any legit studies about such an issue

  19. bowulf Diyor ki :

    Yes, and the …
Yes, and the insulin production on a lower carb or carb conscious approach should be sufficient for any growth. The modern over-abundance of refined grains and sugars is unique in the history of human eating. Having insulin to growth and eating 3-400g of Carbs per day are two different things.

  20. tobiasgeiger Diyor ki :

    yeah right.. but …
yeah right.. but kids need to grow..and insulin is one promoting hormone for growth

  21. bowulf Diyor ki :

    Yep, it’s like they …
Yep, it’s like they believe that kids need pizza at least once a week to be happy or soda daily. Getting kids to eat healthy is hard, but when school, television, and standard nutritionists are all working against you it makes it more difficult.

It just shows how powerful the processed food industry is with the nutrition folks, and I am far from a conspiracy theorist.

  22. KimberlyShane77 Diyor ki :

    I don’t know why …
I don’t know why anyone would rather give their kids sugary cereal and yet balk at “low carbing”… which I have to keep reminding people includes vegetables and fruits. =-/ When did people start having to defend whole foods?? Insane.. LOL
    Great video!

  23. bowulf Diyor ki :

    Yes over 4 years …
Yes over 4 years later and still going strong — 2 pounds below goal weight this morning. The extra skin I showed in the “loose skin” video is still there, so for me it is probably not going to get better. After 200 pounds lost, I think it is as good as one could hope.

  24. bowulf Diyor ki :

    Yep, and we wonder …
Yep, and we wonder why our kids might be over-charged or unable to direct their attention in the afternoon after being loaded with carbs and then crashing blood sugars. It is just a mess, and our kids are being hurt by it.

  25. pshinspections Diyor ki :

    How are you doing …
How are you doing with Atkins after several years? Is the extra skin getting less so, or does one simply learn to accept it?
