Atkins Diet Quick Hits - How do I start?

I am starting a new series of videos based upon the questions or comments I have received either privately or in the comments section. Each of these videos will be targeted to answering that question or issue in short, less than 3 minutes video. I am hoping that these videos can be used as a Frequently Asked Question about the Atkins Diet or Low Carb in general.

In this video, I deal with a question I receive often. How do I start or restart the diet? I come up with three specific recommendations:
1.) Get the junk out of your house. There is no reason to start with cravings staring you in the face.

2.) Get and read the book. The book I mean is either the low carb book of choice or Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (2002).

3.) Hit the low carb recipe sites, like Linda’s Low Carb, and browse the Induction friendly recipes. Make a menu for the week and go shopping.

The last half of this viewer’s question was how long to do the diet. I somewhat answered this already in the last video, but my answer is always “forever. There is no “after” on the Atkins Diet.”

Atkins Diet Quick Hits: Induction is not only 20g or less

In the fourth video of the “Atkins Diet Quick Hits” series, I deal with a question I get from new people asking about a certain lower carb food or frankenfood and if it is ok due to its low carb. It is often not on the Acceptable Foods List or filled with ingredients not on the list. This is when I get into the discussion why the first phase of the diet is more than just reduce your carbs to less than 20g per day.

Here are the main goals of any Induction phase:
1.) Get into ketosis and see its benefits
2.) Get used to the food selection
3.) Control one’s eating habits and prove that control to yourself
4.) Set stage for future weight loss and ability to detect future problem foods when you readd them later

Not following the Induction rules and the Acceptable Foods List erodes the guarantee of your success.

Atkins Diet Quick Hits: Zero Carb

In the this video of the “Atkins Diet Quick Hits” series, I comment on a question I got from a well-meaning low carber. His question was on the amount of what he was eating. I took his question and ran with it though to a different topic. Starvation mode dieting is never good, and similar is zero carb dieting. I am pretty convinced that for most people going zero carb is an unnecessary step. Sure there are some very metabolically resistant and / or people suffering with hyperinsulinemia.

For the most part, most people should be getting their veggies in and not fearing adding back a reasonable amount of carbs. Trying to discover what the magic number per day can certainly be trying, but your health will appreciate it. Thinking zero carbs is the answer also misses number of things:
* phytonutrients without getting more chemicals
* fiber-rich vegetables
* carbs present in other non-veggie sources, like nuts, eggs, or cheese

Unless you are really hyper sensitive to carbs, enjoy the variety of nature and food selection.

Atkins Diet: Myth of Carb-loading

or Can you be a marathoner while doing low carb?

I am convinced that you certainly can be. My current estimate or goal for my half marathon in two weeks is to be sub two hours. I know other marathoners (both half and full) doing Atkins, and I am attempting to prove myself to be another one. The scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals were actually quite interesting and as far as I can tell NOT disputed by any other researchers.

Real life anecdotes are nice, but having science and published reports to back you up legitimizes what I have saying all along. Once you get acclimated to burning fat you no longer live under the same dread of bonking or running out of glycogen during your exercise.
