The Zone isn’t about buying bars or shakes. You can eat regular food, it’s just the proportions of carb, fat and protein that you need to pay attention to. Each of the three are broken into "blocks." One block of carb = 9 grams, protein =7 grams and fat =1.5 - 3 grams.
For example, a one block snack would be 1 oz. turkey breast, half an apple and three almonds.
A three block lunch would be 3 oz. of chicken, on a slice of bread and a table spoon of light mayo.
I know you didn’t want a web links, but this article has a block chart with a break down of a ton of different foods so you don’t have to do all the calculating. It also has a bunch a recipies and will give you an idea of how many blocks you should be eating.
